Mike DeRosa,  Program Director

Dear Parents,

Welcome to the 2014 - 2015 school year.  The Leverett Afterschool Program (LASP) is a great place for children in grades K - 6 to come at the end of the school day to play, create, be with friends, and relax in a supportive and closely supervised environment.  Given the rural nature of Leverett, we like to bring the children of LES together to help create this special “neighborhood”.

Our philosophy is derived from my own personal experience.  I was fortunate to grow up in a suburban/rural neighborhood with children of various ages.  Once we had a snack and did our homework we were allowed to go outside and play.  Games of all types were played ranging from sports based on the season to our creative games of building forts and creating towns complete with cops and robbers, mayors, judges and common folk.  Other popular games included hide and seek, kick the can, red rover, tag and many other traditional neighborhood games.  We also had woods to explore and play in.

Here at LASP we strive to enhance a child’s self esteem and self-directness by encouraging children to be responsible and resourceful.  We encourage cooperation and group building through games and activities that stress skill building and skill acquisition.  We provide materials and activities that are fun, challenging, creative and most importantly safe.  The program is orientated to encourage each child’s physical, cognitive, social and emotional growth.

We offer a daily Homework Club for children who would like to get their homework done and for the parents whose children need to get it done.  Susan Boss (Leverett’s finest art teacher) works with us on Wednesdays and often opens the Art Room for LASP.  The extra time in the art room allows the children to work on special art projects in addition to finishing up school projects.

We spend more time inside as the weather gets colder allowing us to feature a Save the Earth Club on Mondays emphasizing earth friendly activities, recycling and energy saving tips.  A Drama Club will be offered on Tuesdays specializing in theatrical games, activities and performances.  Thursdays will be are our “Game Day” when we encourage the children to play a group game usually based on traditional sports and games.  The children will have the ultimate say on Fridays as we celebrate Kid’s Choice Day often with music and dance.

LASP provides a nutritious snack for children each day.  The program runs from 3:00-5:30 pm on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday.  Wednesdays there are two sessions to cover the longer afterschool period: 1:00-3:15 and 3:15 - 5:30.

LASP is not held on regular school holidays or in the event school is canceled due to inclement weather.  The program is run on shorter conference days.  Please see the school calendar for specific times these occur each year.

Parent Fees are based on a monthly tuition depending on the number of sessions per week one is signed up.  The more sessions one signs up for, decreases the average hourly cost one pays.  Please see the enclosed registration form for the fee schedule.  Bills are issued once a month with payments due on the first of the month for that months coverage.  No refunds are made for days a child does not attend for any reason.

Enrollment in LASP constitutes a commitment and is a privilege.  The LASP Director in conjunction with the School Principal reserves the right to dismiss any child from the program whose continued behavior is disruptive or dangerous.  We have a strict “No Bullying” policy.

Thirty day notice is required for any changes in enrollment.  Space is limited and staff is hired depending on the number of children who sign up so please sign up as soon as possible.

Enclosed you will find a registration form, a parent contract, an emergency form and an emergency closing form which all need to be completed and returned prior to the first day of schoolAny registrations received after this date will be accepted as space becomes available.

There is a $10 registration fee per family used to offset cost of supplies.  Please return these forms as soon as possible with the $10 registration fee and the first months payment to:
