TRANSPORTATION POLICY

 

GENERAL

 

It is the intent of the Leverett School Committee to comply with the letter and spirit of the laws of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, and regulations of the Registry of Motor Vehicles and the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education pertinent to transportation of pupils and the aforementioned laws will govern any areas not covered by specific declaration of policy.

 

TYPE OF SERVICE

 

Transportation shall be by contract with private bus owners and may be for one, three or five year terms unless otherwise authorized by the Superintendent of Schools.

 

ELIGIBILITY

 

All resident pupils residing more than 1 ½ miles from the school attended are entitled to transportation privileges. Exceptions to this policy may be made when road conditions do not provide for the physical safety of the children.

 

RIDING LIMITS, ROUTES AND BUS STOPS

 

Bus routes will be established under the direction of the Principal so that an authorized bus stop is available within a reasonable walking distance of the home of every resident pupil entitled to transportation, that distance not to exceed one mile.

 

Bus stop s shall be established under the direction of the Principal in cooperation with the bus contractors.

 

Authorized bus stops shall be located at convenient intervals in places where pupils may be loaded and unloaded, cross highways and await arrival of buses with the utmost safety allowed by road conditions.

 

ADMINISTRATION OF PROGRAM

 

The Superintendent shall be responsible for execution of transportation policy and regulations adopted to implement the policy.

Bus contractors are subject to all statutes of Massachusetts governing buses, drivers, inspections and licensing.

 

SUPERVISION OF RIDERS

 

The school district, its staff and contracted vendors share with students, parents and guardians the responsibility for student safety during transportation to and from school.  The Principal shall implement and enforce school district requirements for appropriate student conduct and safety on school buses.

 

Bus drivers have the responsibility for the safety of children riding to and from school. Bus drivers have full authority over the bus and its passengers enroute to and from school and during loading and unloading.

 

INSURANCE

 

Transportation contractors shall carry insurance as specified by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and the Leverett School Committee.

 

NOTE

 

Exceptions to the above policy may be made by the School Committee when they deem this action in the best interest of the students and the town.
